A story about implementing a learning platform

28 Oct, 2022| Stefan van den Tol| 2 min read

You want your learning journey to be a huge success, right? A lot of people turn to a learning platform when there’s intent on improving their learning journey. And rightly so! But soon they’ll realise that success is not a straight line and doesn’t always come easy.

There are definitely ways that’ll make the road to success a little smoother though. For example, by having a desired outcome in mind, but focusing on little milestones along the way and using an iterative approach. This allows you to improve the learning journey in a more consistent and reliable manner.

Inspiration from customers

During the online eLearning Indaba event, hosted by New Leaf Tech, I had the honour of telling a story about implementing a learning platform. My inspiration for the story? That came from the 16 years I worked in Customer Success and spoke to a lot of customers. I’ve now bundled all of these experiences to help set you up for success when implementing a learning platform.

What Kelly told Laura

In my story you’ll meet Laura, a learning designer at Awesome Training Company (ATC). Together with Will, the CEO of ATC, she decides to rewrite the company’s vision on learning. They know the world around them is changing rapidly, so they want to make sure they’re ready for the future and what is to come. That’s where new tooling comes in! A learning platform, to be specific.

After selecting a learning platform, Laura is happy but knows that this is merely the beginning. She calls her friend Kelly, who has been implementing learning journeys for several years now. Kelly tells Laura that a vision of huge success is important, but it can also be paralysing to have such a big, audacious goal.

Setting up for success

How do you actually set up for success in the near future? Below, you’ll find some of Kelly’s tips:

  • Write down your desired outcome, but focus on the milestones along the way.

  • Before you start, it’s important to reconsider internal processes, get an insight on available resources and gather stakeholders.

  • Use checklists that result in actions and assign people responsible for those actions.

  • Building learning journeys is not the goal. Instead, define learning objectives and measure learning impact.

  • Have a clear view of how you’re going to evaluate your courses at the end and be sure to define the goals in a measurable way upfront.

More about this topic

Kelly also shares the aNewSpring Success Framework with Laura – a framework that consists of seven steps that will help you set realistic and measurable goals, and plan actions to realize these goals. This then acts as a guide for you to get to the finish line of your first value!
